Yoga Sutra:
2.47 prayatna saithilya ananta samapattibhyam
२.४७ प्रयत्नशौथिल्यानन्तसमापत्तिभ्याम्
Meaning :-
This Yoga Sutra says “there should be no effort that leads to strain and trembling of the body”.
Imagine if a rubber band is pulled very suddenly - it will strain and break. But if it is stretched little by little everyday, it will expand slowly without breaking. This is how our body should be improved with Yoga asanas.

Yoga is not to be done with comparison or to prove that you can do an asana. This is one the main causes why students over-stretch or strain and may even harm themselves while doing yoga asanas. There are some asanas that I can do well. Some you can do better with practice. As per different body types and constitutions, each individual can do certain asanas better than others. This is normal. We don't have to compare ourselves with others.
Our body changes its flexibility when we do asanas slowly. One has to do slowly and only how much one can do. Over a period of time, we will progress.
I request all not to compare and also not to focus on doing all asanas either. If you feel tired in between please take a break and lie down in shavasana and relax your breathing, when you feel relaxed continue with the next Asana that is going on. Yoga should not tire you.
Do not compare with me, I have reached this state after continuous practice for the last 5 years. I had an extremely stiff body initially.
As your breathing becomes better so will your stamina and flexibility.
We have to do yoga only according to our capacity.
Bonus:
If you have read till here, you deserve a bonus !!! Here is further explanation on prayathna-shaithilya.
Yogic practices should be performed with ease and without strain. One should experience physical and mental pleasure out of them. For this, one should follow 4 principles
- Slackening of effort ( prayatna shaithilya )
- Differential/ Partial relaxation ( bhedatmak/ anshatmak shithilata)
- Normal/ natural breathing (Naisargik Shwasana)
- Fixation of mind on the breath( prana dharana )
