Sol kadhi --- refreshing to the soul

When our children were home-schooled, I was lucky to visit the Konkan belt. The beautiful greenery, the simple and tasty cuisine enticed me. I just fell in love with the people, the wilderness, the tribals, the Sahyadri range and the clean flowing water which we could just drink without care; Just about everything. Just speaking about this brings back lovely memories and puts a smile on my face.
We visited Angadi-Bail (a tiny village at the edge of a forest, river, and the sea) and we were hosted by Savitha Uday of BuDa Folklore. Savitha is a wonderful person. As an educationist, she hosts children and gives them the experience/ interaction with the locals, tribals, forest, river, sea, santha. Her place is off the grid and if I start introducing Savitha I will forget that I started with the refreshing Sol Kadhi. But who ever wants to know her can check out her BuDa Folklore blog.

I got introduced to a wonderful fruit called the Kokum. People in the Konkan belt make so many thinks with it. The seed is also used to extract oil which is a butter at room temperature, used in cooking, for hair and skin. The fruit is dried and stored for use through out the year.
Multiple cooling drinks are made with it. One of them being Sol-Kadhi.
I was so interested in making it and wanted the authentic recipe from someone who makes it as a staple diet. I remembered one of my good friend from Goa, Priya Ghate. She shared this wonderful recipe with me. I made it and it was so so yummm..So I am sharing with all..

Ingredients:-
3 to 4 Kokum dried rinds
one green chillies sliced length wise.
hing a pinch
salt
2 cups coconut milk

Soak kokum rinds, slit chilli, powdered hing, salt in a cup of water for 2 to 3 hours till it imparts a wonderful pink colour. Add 2 cups of coconut milk . That is all its ready to eat....It tastes a lot like the refreshing buttermilk.

One can add finely chopped turmeric leaf also .. Gives a complete different smell and flavour.

Benefits of Kokum:-

  • Very cooling to the body
  • High in Anti oxidants
  • Helps in controlling blood sugar

Simple hair care

Aa.... A topic that is so touchy for many. I remember as a child my parents telling me the best way to take care of your hair is apply coconut oil and wash with Reetha / Shikkakai. I was like mom what do you understand the pains of combing the hair.. Hair is so frizzy and the struggles went on to breaking and hair thinning etc...  Went on to try the so called so many conditioners... I noticed it helped temporarily and definately did not feel good by the 2nd day ... 😏  Finally came to a point of balding. Tried even the onion juice , hair creams and infused oils, and lastly tried out even the ayurvedic brands like vedix. etc... All these trials made me think more ... In these trials I understood self made hair creams worked ... Reetha and shikkai worked ... But how much care do we need for the scalp and hair I went on to experiment... And the following helped... Will explain the why and the science behind it too... 1) Being on the nature cure way of life helped as we eat ...
